Worked involved converting field data for over 6000 fish representing 18 species, water quality variables including salinity, bathymetry data, and lake water levels over time. Custom maps and a poster summarizing fisheries resources throughout the lake were created, along with a spatial analysis of the relationship between the distribution of lake trout and salinity. |

The Atlas provides organizations, communities, developers and governments with the means to assess conservation and development values that aids in an integrated approach to conservation and development in the North. Work involved performing a review of existing GIS resources and data providers, data collection, conversion, assembly, and compilation, image processing, production of a Northern Land Use Information Series (NLUIS) mosaic, and design of a multimedia CD interface. The Atlas is distributed as a 3 CD set that spans a wide range of themes including mineral, oil and gas rights and potential, timber productive forests, community conservation plans, heritage sites, ecoregions, wildlife habitat, topography, archaeological sites, land use permits, protected areas, and landcover. A significant portion of the GIS work involved the generation of a digital NLUIS image mosaic from 153 archival paper maps covering the entire Northwest Territories. The NLUIS mosaic is instrumental for providing gap analysis information and facilitating future digitizing work. The collections included the Dene/Métis Mapping Project for all 10 Dehcho communities (converted from Atlas GIS), Randy Freeman's Dehcho Toponymy Database (digitized and converted to Dene orthography), an Oil and Gas Potential Map from the 1980s, conversion of seismic track lines from National Energy Board databases, conversion of the South Nahanni Watershed Woodland Caribou Study (8 maps), digitization of the Norman Wells to Zama right of way and compressor stations (from Enbridge maps), image mosaic creation from 1:20,000 scale forest resource inventory data, image mosaic creation from 153 scanned Northern Land Use Information Series maps, and compilation of 33 digitized Northern Land Use Information Series maps. |

Work involved establishing a digital bathymetric baseline, creating a 3D digital bathymetric surface for the proposed routes, generating 3D water surface levels, and analyzing draft constraints (points of collision between the barge and river bottom) as computer-generated models of the barge and tugboats progressed along each proposed route. Areas where barge draft could be constrained were identified and volumes calculated in an effort to better predict successful routes and derive potential dredging scenarios. Results on the 3D analysis were compiled and distributed in 3D GIS formats and animations on CD. |

Each map within the series featured a detailed legend, background information on all themes, and a location map. |
